Family/Homecoming 2020: a virtual (and actual) success!

Date: Oct 21nd, 2020

Over 300 guests joined us by videoconference this past weekend to celebrate Family/Homecoming Weekend 2020!

Our festivities included:

  • “Live look-in” to Ethics and Leadership class featuring a conversation with 2015 Golden Mug Award winner Ghaith al-Omari (recording here), introduced by Amaani Jetley, DC Fall 2020 student.
  • Evening kick-off celebration

  • Graduate community feedback session chaired by Miles Weddle and Oriana Tannenbaum, both DC Spring 2015 graduates
  • Traditional Family/Homecoming Weekend community “Fishbowl” discussion featuring Dr. Ndjodi Ndeunyema, a Namibian Rhodes Scholar and supporter of the “Rhodes Must Fall” movement, introduced by Niharika “Ri” Bhavsar, SEGL@ALA Spring 2020 graduate
  • Keynote conversation with former CIA Director John Brennan, introduced by Olivia Wee, DC Spring 2020 graduate

  • State of the School conversation featuring SEGL at ALA highlights from Mairéad O’Grady and presentation from Graduate Committee on Anti-Racism co-chairs Nora Estrada and Manavi Sinha, both DC Fall 2019 graduates (recording of conversation here; presentation from Anti-Racism committee here)

The event raised approximately $30,000 toward SEGL’s Annual Fund, which supports scholarships, faculty salaries, and other essential needs. Thanks to everyone who donated! (If you would like to make a tax-deductible gift, click here.)

We’ll see you (in person, we hope) next year!
